Chapter 15

Apparently, his brother didn't care to fight the rain this time. As they jogged to Duncan's car, Andy flipped the neck of his coat up over his head. Duncan opened his umbrella and used his remote access to unlock the Jag for him. Deep puddles formed in the landscaping at each corner of the parking lot. The soil would not absorb much more water.

"I think we should try the closer spots first," Andy yelled over the sound of the rain.

"Agreed," Duncan said. He slipped in and said, "Except I plan to investigate Henderson, Nevada, before that. Nickie will want to inspect that site before working with the closer locations."

"I'm looking at this like a bull's-eye covering the country with the center in upstate New York," Andy said before sinking into his side of the car.

Duncan started the Jag.

"Let's start in the center and work our way out," Andy said.

But, Duncan wasn't listening. He'd left his phone on the charger and vividly remembered turning the sound down.

"Hey, loser," Andy asked as he looked around for the source of the piercing sound. "Did you set off the alarm in your car?"

Panic threatening to consume him, Duncan shook his head and grabbed his phone. "No, that is the home security alarm on my phone." Digging into the alarm program, he scanned the video feed as fast as possible, starting from the time the alarm was first triggered. Twenty minutes ago? "Damn it," he yelled. As his heart went from zero to one-twenty in seconds, he threw the car into gear and bolted out of the parking spot. "Damn it, damn it, damn it!" It would take over an hour to get home going the speed limit. He pressed the gas pedal to the floor and fishtailed onto the highway.

His knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel. His brother didn't comment about the speed reaching over one hundred miles per hour. Duncan's senses were zoned on the police scanner he had rigged to pick up the private NPD channel. It seemed as if there was little chance of getting a ticket as all squads were headed for his home.

"The alarm has been compromised," Duncan growled to Andy. "Your home is too close to mine. Call Rose and tell her to stay away until we contact her."

Andy clicked his seat belt into place and nodded. "Get us there in one piece, brother. Rose is at work."

"Call her anyway. Eddy Lynx is behind this. Pouring rain or not, I recognize him from the still shots my security alarm took in my backyard. He finally grew the balls to show his face. If he touches my dog, I'm going to kill him."

"Hey, now," Andy said over the rain. "We're not going to be killing anyone today. What if you got there—?"

"Detective Eddy Lynx," Duncan said. "Did you hear me? That was Lynx's ugly face that showed in my backyard."

He woke the hands-free device installed in his Jaguar. "Call my wife." Relief flooded him as it was answered after the first ring.
